Ban lifted to allow gay boys join Boy Scouts (MedleyStory)
Fri, May 24, 2013, 2:46 AM

A policy that has been in place for years is now lifted. The Boy Scouts of America, one of the most popular youth organizations across the country, decided to allow openly gay boys to join scouting. The idea of lifting the ban has been on its agenda for years, but today the decision was made. All boys, despite their sexual orientation, are welcomed to join. "Our goal of this was to put kids first," BSA Scout Executive Wayne Brock said. This comes after major controversy as they banned youth gays from joining. About 60 percent of 1,400 voting members of the National Council of Boy Scouts of America voted in Texas to lift that ban, giving all boys a chance to be a scout. "I believe this is in the best interest of scouting and it allows us to serve youth who want to be apart of scouting and experience life-changing experience," Brock said. Some conservative groups and churches, who sponsor scouts across the country, have threatened to stop funding for scouting. BSA leaders believe they made the best decision for their organization. "We believe that when people have a time to reflect on what we actually accomplished today and what the resolution says. Stop and think and you will say that serving our kids is the most important thing we can do," BSA National President Wayne Perry said. And people we talked to agree with the decision. "Why discriminate you know. If someone is a certain way, why look at them in a different light," said London Jefferson, who lives in Johnstown. "I think everyone should be created equally. I think if people want to be a part of the boy scouts, should be," said Leah Allison, who lives in Johnstown The change goes into effect Jan. 1, 2014. BSA leaders say this will give them time to work with 116,000 Boy Scout units across the county, but openly gay adults are still banned

Jefferson Co. man battling ALS plans fundraiser to help others battling disease (MedleyStory)
Thu, May 23, 2013, 9:11 PM

For nine years, Duane Siple of Punxsutawney has been battling Amyotrophic  Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) most commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. When Siple was diagnosed, he lost the ability to speak. But, thanks to newer technology he is still able to have a voice. “It is basically a connection between the nerves and the muscles stop communicating and the neurons slowly die,” Siple said. On average the life expectancy for those diagnosed with the disease is two to five years. “There is no known treatment or anything to relieve the symptoms. I’m determined to help find one,” Siple said. Siple came up with the idea of having a night devoted to helping people battling the disease. On Friday, several local restaurants will donate a portion of its earnings to the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the ALS Association. “They keep the money local and they have help me many, many times,” Siple said. “He has told me that he thinks his body has failed and his brain hasn’t. He thinks his brain is compensating for his body’s failure,” said Betty Siple, Duane’s mother. The restaurants participating are as follows: Fox’s Pizza of Punxsutawney, Mary’s Place Restaurant & Catering of Punxsutawney, Gimmicks Restaurant of Punxsutawney, Chestquehanna Family Dining of Mahaffey, Luigi’s Ristorante of DuBois, The Eagles Club of Sykesville, Rumors Tavern & Restaurant of Punxsutawney and Specialty Foods by Creative Catering of Lower Burrell. “You never know whose dollar is going to be the one to find a cure for ALS,” Betty Siple said. “It would be nice to know the community is behind the people suffering this, because with cancer or illnesses you at least have a chance of beating it. With ALS there is only hope,” Duane Siple said. Restaurants that are participating in the event will donate a portion of its earnings that are made between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Other businesses wanting to participate can by calling 938-9157. Businesses and individuals can also help by donations. Checks can be made payable to the ALS Association of Western Pennsylvania c/o Duane Siple, 233 Cloe Church St.m Punxsutawney PA 15767.

Dog left in heat in New Castle; Owner facing animal abuse charges (MedleyStory)
Thu, May 23, 2013, 3:33 PM

A New Castle woman facing animal cruelty charges said she would never intentionally endanger her dog. Dolores Graham said she loves her 9-month-old pit bull mix named Dingo, but the charges against her do not reflect that. After a call from a neighbor, police said they found the dog outside in the heat earlier this week in a small cage with no food or water. Dingo was then taken away by officers in a police cruiser. Graham said it was a stupid mistake. She said there was a family emergency and she had to rush out of the house. According to Graham, she put Dingo in a shaded area of her yard with food and water, and during the five hours she was gone her children checked on the dog twice. Graham regrets leaving her dog, but doesn’t believe she should be facing animal cruelty charges. She said Dingo is loved as a member of the family.
